Five Ways to Take Your Reading to the Next Level
Get Connected to Your Library and Online Reading Checkout
If you are an avid reader but have not made use of your local library then you should “check it out.” You can get a library card, check out books, use their app to put books on hold to pick up, and use their convenient online check out for e-books and audiobooks. You will never run out of books/magazines to read and they’re free! In addition, public libraries have adult programs and special events, as well as having book clubs, and children’s activities. Take a look at this post, Use Your Public Library, for lots of information. I mostly make use of the online e-book/audiobook checkout by using the Libby App that my local library system uses.
Join a Book Club or Start Your Own
Another way to enhance your reading journey is to join a book club. It is such fun to read the same book and then get together to discuss it and get everyone’s different feelings and views. It is a great way to connect with other readers and enjoy a little personal time sharing your hobby with others. If you don’t know of a book club to join ask at your library or start your own. Visit our post Five Simple Steps to Creating an Amazing Book Club to get started.
Book Blogs, Social Media, and Podcasts
If you want to look for new titles, great authors, or other bookish information then subscribe to a couple of good book blogs. Check out our post Awesome Book Blogs that Avid Readers Will Love for suggestions. Check out our book reviews section as well for many recommendations. Be sure to follow some book related Facebook/Instagram pages for lots of suggestions or listen to book related podcasts. A simple search on any social platform will give you loads of choices.
Try Something New
One way to get more from your reading hobby is to try something new. Perhaps a new genre, a new author, a new book series, books made into TV shows or movies, books from other regions or countries. It surely will expand your reading knowledge to try something new. Another way is to ask friends to recommend a book that they love or enjoyed or take a look at this post, Blind Date With a Book, for suggestions. Or check out this post for a new author to try, Authors With Books Galore You’ll Love to Read.
Invest in a Subscription Service
I put this last as it does involve costs. If you’ve ever tried a subscription box this is the same concept but with books. One subscription that I recommend is Cratejoy: Books & More by Box of Books. You can put in your personal preferences for reading and they will send you one or two books (depending which you choose) plus some extra perks. If you have already read a book they will include another book in the next box for free. It’s fun to get the box and see what is inside! Or take a look at this Book of the Month subscription. I have not used this one but I am tempted!
