My Grandmother’s Needlepoint – A Lasting Reminder of Her Love
A Hobby That Turned into Beautiful Works of Art
From pillows to Christmas stockings, my grandmother’s needlepoint gifted us all with a lasting legacy of her love. Over the years, she created beautiful pieces for everyone in the family. The many hours of precise stitching gave us visible knowledge of how much she loved us. When people married into the family or a baby was born, they each got their own needlepoint Christmas stocking. Framed pieces of her needlepoint like the one pictured above were made for our homes. Lovely needlepoint pillows still grace our sofas. We were all so fortunate that she took up this hobby, so we have a daily reminder of her.
A Treasured Album of Her Needlepoint Work
Since my grandmother created so many pieces of needlepoint, my mother made a photo album with pictures of all of her work. I am still amazed at how she was able to create so much art with her needle.
Here are just a few pictures of her legacy she left behind with her needlepoint.
A Hobby That Was Passed On
After seeing how beautiful her finished works were, I was inspired to take up needlepointing myself. Several times, my grandmother and I each stitched the same needlepoint kit and then gave our finished project to each other. I enjoy the repetitive nature of the stitching, and I find the basic stitches are very easy to learn.
While I cannot claim to be nearly as prolific as my grandmother, I have stitched several smaller pieces as gifts for others over the years. And I have a bag full of projects in progress. Writing this post has inspired me to pick up my needle more often and create my own works of art.
How to Get Started Needlepointing
If you are interested in taking up this hobby, then here is a great article from The Spruce Crafts website to get you started. There are many sources for purchasing needlepoint kits that include the yarn, printed canvas, and directions. Etsy and other specialty online sellers offer kits as well as your basic big box craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s.
If you would like to try out needlepointing without investing a lot of money, then Amazon has great kits for beginners such as this one featuring colorful zinnias that are less than $10. If you are already an avid needlepoint person, then you might be like me and dream of stitching an Elizabeth Bradley kit. The Elizabeth Bradley kits are not inexpensive. Their smallest sized kits start at $90. If you are like myself and that is out of your price range at the moment, it is still fun to look at all their lovely designs.
Note: The links to the needlepoint kits are affiliate links. That means, if you purchase one of these items through the link, What A Good Day will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. The opinions are my own. We appreciate your support!
