Becoming a grandparent is one of the most indescribable experiences that exists. If you have a grandchild you already know that you have the icing on the cake, won the lottery, and been given the greatest gift. I am a Gammie, so I know this is true. I also know that spoiling those precious babies is one of our most favorite things. However, for this post, let’s switch gears and talk about spoiling the grandparents! Here are a few thoughtful suggestions for gifts or fun times that will definitely spoil those precious parents/grandparents in your life and make them feel dearly loved.
Invite the grandparents to go on an adventure, like a day trip, picnic, overnight trip, or even a vacation together. They will love having that extra special time with you and the grands and it will be a memorable time for everyone.
Spend some time visiting with the grandparents and specifically ask them to tell you something you don’t know about their life. You may be surprised. I remember asking my 93 year old dad to tell me something I did not know about him and he told me a wonderful story about helping with an air show back in the 1930’s when he was a teenager. It was the first time he ever went up in a plane. I loved hearing his story and he had such fun reminiscing.
Grandparents can always use a helping hand. Getting older makes lots of jobs around the house more difficult. Plan a time when you and the grands will help with cleaning, yard work, house repairs, sprucing up the house, redecorating, or organizing. Help with chores is always appreciated!
It is easy to find cute handprint art projects on Pinterest. You can find one that is perfect for your special gift for a beloved grandparent. Handprint art will just grow more precious as time goes by and those little hands grow into adult hands.
Sweet handwritten notes or cards from older grandkids or handmade cards from the little ones are always special. They are a treasure that will warm any grandparent’s heart. This post for making valentines can easily be used for making grandparent cards. Or this cute card made from paint chips can be transformed to a Grandparent’s Day card.
Like handprints, silhouettes are a special keepsake. To find out how to make these precious gifts take a look at this post, Make Silhouettes for Someone Special.
For one occasion, my daughter in law, Lauren, had a calendar for the upcoming year made using photos from the year before on a collage page for each month. It was and is my most favorite calendar ever! You can customize the calendar by uploading photos arranged however you would like. You can find these on many photo websites like, Shutterfly, Snapfish, or Collage.com. As a quick alternative, you can also order a calendar like the one pictured above and insert your own photos to personalize it.
My daughter has done several different kinds of photo collages and displays for Pop and me. We love looking at all the pictures that she has included. The possibilities are endless. You can use random favorite photos or organize the photos around a theme or event. You can have a canvas made, or buy a collage frame, or a photo array.
Another way to share photos is a digital photo frame like the one pictured above. There are many styles and various levels of technology available. These are so much better than having actual photos since it can be playing constantly and the photos can be enjoyed all the time.
How about fixing up a basket of favorite homemade goodies? Grandparents will enjoy all the great treats and will love that it was prepared by their sweethearts. You can include their homemade favorites: cookies, brownies, cake, cheese wafers, party mix, sausage balls, toasted nuts, salsa and chips, candy, muffins, etc. Need a cookie or muffin recipe? Check out these recipes: My Favorite Blueberry Muffins, The Best Peanut Butter Cookies, Valentine’s Day Cookie Swap (sugar cookies & glaze).
If you don’t have time or inclination to do all the cooking then fix up a basket of the grandparents’ store bought favorites from the grocery store or a local bakery. My daughter fixed up my dad a gift bag of goodies from Cracker Barrel’s store with all the old fashioned sweets, peanut brittle, and jarred items and he thoroughly enjoyed it! A themed basket is also good. For example: a coffee or tea basket with all the extras, a fruit basket with some crackers, cheese, and wine included, a snack basket with assorted salty, savory, or sweet snacks.
Many grandparents appreciate a practical and useful gift. This type of collection could include everyday items like stamps, grocery store gift card, nice sheets or towels, candles, coffee, small kitchen appliances or fun gadgets, or other needed supplies.
For this gift, get a decorative jar and tie a pretty ribbon around it. Get some pretty note paper and have your children write some I love you notes to their grandparents. They can write reasons the grandparent is special, things they enjoy doing together, reasons they love them, thank you notes, or special memories they have of them. They can include notes that are coupons that are good for some kind of help or for fun activities like lunch out, a shopping trip, or a visit to relatives. Grandparents love time with the kids and grandkids. This way if they are feeling a bit lonely they can call (or text) to set up a time to redeem their coupon.
My grandkids recently, with the help of their mom, went shopping for Pop. Each grand picked out a T-shirt for him. Our oldest picked out a Super Mario shirt, our middle sweetie picked out a Baby Yoda shirt, and little one picked out a Mickey Mouse shirt for him. They were so proud of their gifts and he loves these special shirts. Now he wears them when we are together with the grands. They love it when he wears the shirt they picked out and he does too.
Signs are very popular in decorating right now. A sweet sign with a bible verse, a saying that if from the heart, or a loving personal message will be sure to make a grandparent’s day. There are many that can be found on Amazon, at Hobby Lobby, or other stores. Or there are personalized ones that local businesses make or you can have made by people on Etsy.
I hope that something in this post has gotten your creativity going and you will come up with a delightful gift that will make the grandparents in your life feel loved. Without a doubt, just as grandchildren are a gift so are grandparents, therefore, it’s always a good day to spoil them a little bit. Whatever you choose do, let them know how very much they are loved!
All My Best,
Karen
