Five Easy Homemade Ornaments You Can Make For Christmas
I am a huge fan of homemade ornaments. They are warm, homey, and sentimental. The ornaments I’ve included here are some that I have done over the years with students or with my children. They are simple enough that they can be done with the kiddos in your life or you can spend some time making them for yourself. Either way, they are lots of fun to make and will be an excellent addition to your ornament collection.
Cinnamon Spice Ornaments
Cinnamon spice ornaments are very simple to make but they look so pretty and they make your home smell so good. Also, these cute ornaments aren’t just for Christmas. They will make a nice addition to your kitchen year round. When I was teaching, this was one of ornaments that we did each year with the students. I also made them with my own children. We have had them for years and they continue to retain the wonderful smell. For the very best tutorial on making cinnamon spice ornaments click here to head on over to Ruffles and Rainboots. Cornstarch & Baking Soda Ornaments
In my early years of teaching I would make ornaments from salt dough but I found that they were fragile and did not look the way I wanted. Then I found out about cornstarch and baking soda dough. It is the best dough for making ornaments. It dries hard and lasts. This sweet gingerbread boy was made by my son 21 years ago. He shows a little wear but he is still in good shape and very solid. With this type of dough you can make the ornaments as simple or as embellished as you would like. Check out this post on Tips From a Typical Mom for the recipe and directions and some neat ideas.
Snowman Handprint Ornament
My daughter made this sweet ornament for me using my grandson’s little hand. It is one of my most favorite ornaments. They are easy to do and are definitely a special keepsake. These would make great gifts for grandparents or for a special aunt or uncle. It would be so special to make these each year with your children until their hands are too big to fit on the ball. Check out this tutorial on Simple Fun for Kids. It’s really not hard to do at all and turns out so cute.
Mason Jar Lid Ornaments
There are so many types of ornaments you can make using Mason jar lids or rings. The one pictured was made by my son back in 1994. It is his fingerprint that has been turned into a cute little mouse. The ring is covered with ribbon with a loop glued in for hanging. It is such a sweet little ornament. We did these with the kindergarten students for several years. Like me, the parents all loved them. Click here to take a look at this post on Crafty Morning for lots of ideas about making ornaments using Mason Jar lids.
Birdseed Ornaments
This ornament is for the birds! They are simple to make and you can hang them outside to help feed the birds in winter. Kids really love making these. Everyone enjoys watching the birds come to enjoy them. Of course, you can make these any time of year but they are so cute hanging outside on a tree in your yard at Christmastime.
