There is very little that makes me happier than watching children think and create. No doubt, that comes from being an elementary school teacher for 31 years! These days, I spend much of my time enjoying being with my grandchildren and providing them with age appropriate activities and learning experiences. Meanwhile, they think we’re just having fun! This valentine card making activity is one such activity that sparks creativity, as well as makes some sweet memories with your children (or grandchildren) and delivers lots of sweet smiles that are sure to make any day a good day.
Listen to your heart!
It is important for children to feel confident and successful as they attempt creative activities. This simple and easy valentine card making activity achieves that, as it can be modified for any age so that every child can do most all of the work on their own. In addition, this project is very open ended in that every creation will turn out unique so there isn’t one correct product. For this activity, I spent time with each grandchild individually as they created their cards. Don’t we all love that one on one time with each child? They made these valentines for their parents with minimal help from me and they can’t wait to share the love with their mom and dad!
All you need is love!
Materials needed:
- construction paper (assorted colors) or purchased paper heart cutouts (varied sizes and colors) Etsy has some but I have not used them. I used the template linked below and cut out all the hearts ahead of time because my grands are young and cannot cut well yet. Older children could color and/or cut out their own heart shapes.
- hearts template with various sizes (I used this free download from whatmommydoes.com Lovely Heart Collection) She also has other templates with larger hearts.
- scissors
- glue/glue stick
- crayons or markers
I stapled the hearts template from whatmommydoes.com to multiple pages of construction paper and cut them out while watching some TV. It was quick and easy.
This is a very nice set of paper that can be used for many projects. It is a bigger size to use for larger crafts.
Baby Love!
Baby Doll is only 19 months old. These are her valentine creations. She colored on a piece of white construction paper. I traced two heart shapes on it, then cut them out, and glued them to a folded piece of construction paper. For the other card, she picked the hearts she wanted from the pile. I put some glue dots all around on the card front and she placed them on it. She “signed” the inside of the cards with a marker. Of course, I wrote her name and dated the bottom. Baby Doll had a ball and her valentines are just as sweet as she is!
Wild Thing! You make my heart sing!
The two cards below were made by three year old, Little Bear. He did a great job slowing down to work on his valentines. We worked together to tear some red and pink construction paper in little pieces. He chose the black paper. (I think he has a good eye for design!) I helped him glue a white heart on the front. Working in small sections, I put the glue and he placed the torn pieces of red and pink construction paper. For his second one, he wanted to make a butterfly out of hearts so with only a little help putting the wings on the paper he was able to pick out the hearts and did the rest. He “signed” the inside of the cards and I wrote his name and dated them. Who wouldn’t love to be given these special love notes from a sweet boy?
You'll be in my heart!
The valentines below were created by my six year old grandson, Sweet Roo. This boy loves making crafts so he was excited about this project. He wanted to make a butterfly like his brother and then do something different with all the heart shapes. Applying his own glue and doing all the work on his own was not a problem for him. After he finished the fronts, he was able to personalize the inside of his cards on his own as well. He loved this activity so much that he wanted to make more valentines!
These are just a few very simple, easy ideas for valentine card making with young children. Your little ones will add their own special touches to personalize their cards. Have fun and don’t worry about the cards not being perfect. Their charm is in how unique they are. I would love to see your child’s sweet creations as well. Please post them in the comments section! Enjoy this activity; along with all the smiles, and love!
Have fun!

I will definitely be doing these with my 2 year old granddaughter!! These are so special!!
I’d love to see pictures of the Valentines they made! 🙂
I make Valentine bookmarks using old envelopes. Cut a heart shape on the corner of the old envelope (point of the heart is the corner of the envelope) and decorate with stickers or markers. Bookmark slips over the corner of the page.
I love this idea! Kids would enjoy it too. And so easy for even the youngest little ones! ❤️
What a great idea! I like re-using anything that I can! Kids really would have a ball making these. Thank you!
