Then this easy recipe for cordon bleu will boost your confidence and win you praise for your culinary skills. All you need are five ingredients: chicken, ham, cream cheese, Swiss cheese, and bacon. Voila! You have a delicious French twist on your chicken dinner.
This recipe has been used by my family since my sister came home with an assignment for her French class to make a French dish. I cannot give credit to the original author of the recipe as it was never known.
Whether you are looking for a make ahead dinner for a weeknight meal or a nice entree for company, this recipe for Chicken Cordon Bleu fits the bill. It pairs perfectly with your favorite green vegetable and some simple fruit for a lovely meal that requires little effort.

Helpful Hints for Making Chicken Cordon Bleu
Here are a few helpful hints to make this recipe even easier.
- Soften cream cheese to room temperature for easier spreading.
- Prepare all ingredients needed on a plate or board so your assembly will be easy. This also helps prevent cross contamination.
- Use a rolling pan, heavy skillet, or a meat mallet for pounding the chicken breasts flat.
- Ensure the chicken breasts are pounded out to roughly 1/2″ so you can roll them up.
- Secure with toothpicks but don’t forget to remove them before serving.
- If needed, you can broil the Chicken Cordon Bleu for a minute or two at the end of cooking to help crisp up the bacon.
- This recipe is easy to scale up or down.
- This recipe is great to assemble ahead of time and store in the fridge for up to two days.
Chicken Cordon Bleu
Ingredients
- 6 small boneless skinless chicken breasts or you can use 3 large chicken breasts cut in half
- 6 slices deli ham or 12 slices if ham is thinly cut
- 8 oz. cream cheese, softened to room temp
- 6 slices Swiss cheese
- 6 slices bacon
Instructions
- Set out cream cheese to soften to room temperature.
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Place chicken in between layers of plastic wrap and pound them out to approx. 1/2" thickness.
- Layer the ingredients in the order below.
- Place 1-2 slices of ham (depending on thickness of ham) on top of chicken breast
- Spread a layer of cream cheese of top of ham.
- Place 1 slice of Swiss cheese on top of cream cheese.
- Roll up the chicken breast lengthwise once you have layered the ham and two cheeses on top of the flattened chicken breast.
- Wrap one slice of bacon around the rolled up chicken breast and secure with toothpicks.
- Place in a greased baking dish (or one lined with foil).
- Bake in oven for 40-45 minutes or until internal temperature of chicken reaches 165°.
- Broil for 1-2 minutes at end of cooking if bacon needs crisping.
- Let chicken rest for 10 minutes before serving. Remove the toothpicks prior to serving.
