Easy Buttermilk Drop Biscuits You Can Make in a Snap
Who doesn’t love a good, hot buttermilk biscuit? They make any meal feel more homey and comforting. Without a doubt, my mama was hands down the best biscuit maker. She probably made a million or more biscuits in her lifetime. Raising and feeding a large family, she would make them for breakfast and sometimes make more for dinner. Mother made hers the old traditional southern way. I can just see her standing over that big bread bowl with flour, buttermilk, and Crisco mixing them, rolling them in her hands, and placing them on the baking pan. Now, after practice, I am able to make biscuits in much the same way she did and they are good; but, what I would give to be able to sit down at her table and enjoy one of her biscuits again!
Now get ready for a plot twist!
Now, you probably think this post is about my mama’s biscuit recipe or how she made them. Here’s the twist! It’s not. Surprisingly, this post is about my daddy’s recipe! Unfortunately, when my mother’s health declined in later years it prevented her from making biscuits anymore. Then, my daddy stepped up and started making them. Who knew he could make biscuits? He had this easy recipe that he got from his brother. While they are not my mama’s perfectly formed biscuits, they are wonderfully fluffy, tasty, and so incredibly easy to make without the messy, doughy hands! Best of all, I can get them on the table in a snap! If you’re busy like I am, that is a definite plus!
Easy Buttermilk Drop Biscuits
Ingredients
- You only need 3 ingredients.
- Self rising flour – I use White Lily. It’s the only kind my mama would ever use! Also, it has to be sifted well to get out any lumps.
- Whole buttermilk – low fat buttermilk will not work as well. I have tried!
- Canola oil or melted butter – the ones pictured were made with butter but canola oil works as well. When using melted butter, cool it a bit in the fridge before using it.
Here's the secret to fluffy biscuits!
When I was first learning to make biscuits like my mama they would be hard; definitely not fluffy at all. Seriously, my dog wouldn’t even touch them. Needless to say, I was disappointed and frustrated. When I asked my mother, she said, “You are messing with the dough too much.” In truth, biscuit dough really doesn’t take much “messing with”. So keep that in mind when making these drop biscuits. You put all the ingredients in a bowl. Next, you mix them with a large spoon literally for seconds just until the ingredients form a very soft wet dough. And then stop! Don’t mess with it too much! 🙂
Time to make the biscuits!
Now, just take your spoon and divide the dough into 4 sections. Be sure to have your baking pan ready to go. I do a light spritz of cooking spray on my pan. At this point, you can proceed one of two different ways. First of all, you can use your spoon to drop the dough onto the pan placing them just touching as shown. Then put a little flour or oil on your fingers and smooth out the tops so they don’t have pointy peaks on top. Or, you can flour your hands a little and spoon the dough onto your hand and then roll it around just a little to shape it into a ball. Lay them out on the pan placing them next to each other as shown and flatten them a bit. This recipe makes 4 biscuits. You can double it if needed.
Now just pop them in the oven at 425 degrees for about 15 minutes. Be sure the oven is preheated. That is important! My oven is very hard to gauge at times so I watch mine toward the end to make sure they are the right golden color. If they are not brown enough on top just do a short broil to add the color on top. Be sure to watch them closely if you do that!
Now you are ready to enjoy your easy buttermilk biscuits with some butter, jelly or jam, gravy or just to munch on the side.
Enjoy!
