February 28th is Floral Design Day. What a good day to try your hand at creating your own floral design! The arrangement pictured above is one that my sister and I created recently. I love the blue and yellow together because it reminds me of sun, sky, sea, and sand! It makes me think of springtime as well. Read on for a summary of this DIY floral design.
I went to Hobby Lobby to get the materials I needed to create this design. First, I looked at white glass containters and was amazed to see that they were twenty dollars or more! A trip over to the craft section ended with me finding the perfect clear jar that was less than $4.00. I purchased a bottle of white acrylic paint so that I could paint my jar (see instructions below). You could also use a Mason jar if you have one on hand.
It is very easy to paint a clear container any color you want it to be. I dumped the whole 2 oz. bottle of white acrylic paint into a Solo cup. I gradually added small amouts of water to thin out the paint a little. You don’t want the paint too thin so be careful. You just want it to move around in the jar easily. Then, I put the paint in the jar, put the lid on and moved the jar around to completely cover the inside. When it was covered well, I took off the lid and dumped out the remainder of the paint. Then I let the jar dry well. I turned mine upside down on wax paper so that any excess paint could drain out.
The bow is made from jute cord and natural wooden beads. These were also found at Hobby Lobby. I wrapped the cord around the jar to be sure of the length needed and then cut it. I added the beads and knotted the cord below, then wrapped the cord back around and made a bow.
Choosing your flowers for your design is fun but also a little bit difficult due to the many choices available. It helps to decide on colors and the look you want beforehand. Look online at images of floral designs to get ideas. I knew I wanted the colors blue, yellow, and white. The type of design I had chosen was not a round compact design so I needed some longer stems and something shorter that would fill in. I chose the white roses first and then the long stems. The design ended up requiring one bunch of roses, two blue stems, and three yellow stems with some flower pieces left over. One bunch of ivy was needed because I wanted something hanging down around the jar as well. Additional greenery was not necessary since I did not want it overly full.
Arranging flowers is sometimes done using styrofoam in the bottom of the container to hold the flowers in place. However, I wanted the design to look more natural than fixed so we just carefully placed the flowers in the jar. I hoped they would be held tightly once they were in place and it worked! We started with the roses and cut off several at the length we needed and place them randomly in the jar. Next we began adding the taller stems, cutting them off the stems to the various lengths needed to have some shorter and some taller in the jar. This part takes some time, patience, and trial and error. If you do a DIY floral project don’t get discouraged. Just keep trying! And remember there is no right or wrong! Make it look the way you want!
One of the roses was too big for the section it was in so I was able to take off the plastic part at the back and remove some of the petals. It made the rose the perfect size. For the final part, we cut some lengths of ivy and added them in around the bottom of the arrangement into the top of the jar. It was the perfect touch to finish off the design.
I will confess that this was the first floral design that I have ever created and I was glad to have my sister there to help me along. It really does take some thought and planning. But more than anything it takes patience and willingness to keep trying to get it right. In the end, I am so happy with the way it turned out and I love it on my kitchen table. I would definitely encourage you to give floral design a try if you are looking for a DIY project.
Have a good day!
