DIY Easter Sign Project: Easy and Fun for Everyone
This cute little DIY Easter sign project is so easy and fun to make. Furthermore, this farmhouse style sign is one that the kids in your life can help with, no matter their age, so that your creation will be a keepsake you will want to display year after year! In addition, there are other variations if you just want a cute Easter activity to do with your little ones.
Materials needed:
- Wooden sign, board, crate, or use a canvas if you prefer. (I used a 13.78 inch square wooden sign from Hobby Lobby.)
- Acrylic paint: white, green, your choice of pastel colors, and sky blue if you are painting the background of a canvas.
- White pom pom (tail)
- Pink button (nose)
- Ribbon in a matching color
- Wooden letters (Hobby Lobby) I used “brushed” style.
- Clip clothespins
- Kitchen sponges (cut into pieces)
- Strong glue like Tacky Glue
- Bunny template (This bunny template is the one I used for this project.) Prepare this ahead by printing or tracing this on some tagboard or thick paper and cut out the middle so that you have the bunny shape as shown in the picture below.
- Egg template – cut out middle also. I did a freehand drawing on an index card for mine but you can click here for an egg template with various sizes to choose from if you want.
- Newspaper for your work surface.
Instructions for your DIY Easter sign
- Set up your work area with all the materials you will need. Cover the area with newspaper.
- If you are using a canvas paint the entire background sky blue and let it dry.
- Put some green paint on a styrofoam plate or foil covered cardboard palette. Now, have your little ones use their finger dipped in the green paint to make the grass along the bottom of the sign. (The picture shows my 3 year old grandson working on the grass.) You can also use a sponge and sponge paint the grass it if you would like to. Just pinch the sponge piece in the clothespin and dab the paint on with it. This keeps your fingers and the little ones’ fingers from getting messy. Allow the green paint to dry well.
- Position your bunny cutout where you want it on your sign. You can tape it down, however be sure to test it to make sure it will not remove the paint or stain before taping it! If so, you can just hold it in place taking care not to let it slip. Put some white paint (or whatever color you choose for your bunny) on your palette. Use a sponge pinched in a clothespin. Dip it into the paint and then dab it all over the inside of the bunny template. Keep in mind you want it to look splotchy, not smoothly painted. In addition, you do not want your sponge saturated as paint may run underneath your template. The picture shows my 6 year old grandson sponge painting the bunny.) Carefully lift off the template. Let this dry completely.
- For eggs in the grass, use your egg template and sponge paint inside with your choice of colors. (The pictures shows my 21 month old granddaughter doing a lovely job on the eggs.) Let each egg dry before doing another one.
- Paint your letters in pastel colors and glue them to your sign in whatever position you would like.
- Fancy it up with a button nose, pom pom tail, and pretty bow or other embellishments.
- And just like that you are ready for a “Hoppy Easter!”
Variations of this activity
Make it a simple art activity for your little ones by using construction paper, child’s water based art paint, cotton ball for the tail, a small pink pom pom for the nose, or a fingerprint will do, and maybe even a googly eye!
You can use the template on a wooden box and put in Easter grass, candy, other goodies or Easter decorations.
Another cute idea is to use a carrot template instead of the eggs to make your sign a decoration for anytime. You can change the caption or simply not have one.
Use the same bunny template and sponge paint grass and a bunny on a large clay pot to use for houseplants or as a decorative pot.
You can change it, add more or less decorations to make it as fancy or simple as you wish.
I hope you and your little ones enjoy this DIY Easter sign project and that your sign is one that you will bring out year after year. I know it will be one that is special because of the sweet memories that it brings back and because of the special little fingers that helped make it.
Have a ‘hoppy’ day!
