How to Host a Pie Party on the Porch
Hosting a pie party on the porch is a perfect (and easy!) way to entertain your friends this fall. Unlike some parties, this is one that does not require a ton of time or money to pull together. Everyone brings their favorite pie, so you don’t spend hours in the kitchen. By having it on the porch, your house does not have to be spotless. Read on for the key elements to make your Pies on the Porch party a success!

Your Pies on the Porch Party Plan
Invite Guests
It’s not a party without guests, so make a list of who you want to invite. You also need to decide on the day and time. You have two options for timing: 1) Serve savory pies as well as sweet ones if you are planning a party time around a meal or 2) Plan for a mid afternoon or after dinner time if you are only planning on sweet pies.
Once the above is decided, then it’s time to send out a fun invitation! I have designed this one in Canva that you can customize with your information. You can print them out or download as a PDF to text or email.
Canva is an easy to use free graphic design program. Access the link for this invitation design by clicking on the button below. If you do not already have a Canva account, it will ask you to create one for free. You do not need the paid Canva Pro version to use my design.
Purchase & Gather Party Supplies
Here is a list of basic party supplies you will need for your Pies on the Porch Party:
- Tables for the pies
- Plenty of knives for slicing
- Pie servers (or ask guests to bring one with their pies)
- Tablecloths
- Plates, forks, napkins, cups
- Table decorations
- Trash can and trash bags
Because I live in the South, fall is the ideal time for planning a party on the porch. If you live where it is too cold to be on the porch during the fall, then change it up and host one in the summer. Or you can easily host it inside your home.
PRO TIP: Disposable dinnerware makes the most sense for any outside party to avoid breakage of real plates and glasses.
Plan Activities
Of course, eating pie is the main activity! You can also add these fun ideas to make your pie party even more memorable.
- Have a pie eating contest
- Give out blue ribbons for “best” tasting/prettiest/unique, etc.
- A pie in the face contest would be especially entertaining for kids
Add Fun Details
Details make the difference! I always love to add fun little touches to make guests feel extra special. Here are a few ideas for inspiration.
Take Home a Slice Boxes
Purchase pie slice containers for take home slices. For an extra detail, you can decorate them with fun stickers like these below that say “Live Free Pie Hard”. You can click on the images below to purchase. You can also create your own stickers in Canva. Go to canva.com to put your own creative touch on a pie party sticker.
Vintage Pie Server Favors
If you love to go thrifting or shopping at antique stores, look for vintage pie servers. Tie a ribbon around each one with a fun tag for an on theme take home favor. Check out the Tiny Tag Co. for these adorable tags. You can customize the wording to your specifications. I’m not affiliated with the Tiny Tag Co. I just love all their designs!
Recipe cards
Buy some old fashioned blank recipe cards for guests to use. They can write down their favorite recipes from the pie party. Or you can go the extra mile and get the recipes in advance from your guests. You can put together a recipe booklet for guests to take home.

Party Prepping Before and On the Day of Event
Since this is an easy event to prepare for, the list of things to do is relatively short for a Pies on the Porch party. To make things even easier, the first list is made up of things you can do ahead of time.
Before the Day of the Party:
- Determine if you need to borrow, rent, or buy extra tables and chairs
- Borrow, rent, or buy plates, cutlery, glasses, and napkins
- Make plans to borrow extra knives for slicing pies if necessary
- Clean the areas of your home where guests will be (bathroom, kitchen, etc.)
- Buy flowers or other decorations for table decorations
- Bake and freeze your own pie for the party
Day of Party:
- Finish any last minute cleaning
- Set up tables and chairs on porch
- Decorate tables with tablecloth and centerpieces
- Set out plates, cups, forks, etc.
- Set up table for drinks
- Set out trash can if using disposable dinnerware or a table for empty plates and cups
- Set up for any activities planned
- Set out take home favors if you are doing that
- Get yourself ready with at least 30 minutes to spare before guests arrive
PRO TIP: To fit more pies on a table, elevate! Place a stack of books underneath the tablecloth or use decorative cake stands to elevate some of the pies. Then you can fit more underneath the elevated pies.
Need a Recipe for Your Pies on the Porch Party?
We have several pie recipes on our website if you need an easy recipe to serve at your pie party. Another great source for pies that taste homemade is the Southern Baked Pie Company. They ship their pies nationwide in the U.S. They also have four retail locations in Georgia. I am not affiliated with Southern Baked Pie Company, but I can personally attest that their pies are absolutely delicious! Amanda Wilbanks (the founder) also has a cookbook which is one of my favorites.
