Ten Simple Fashion Staples That Will Make You Feel and Look Amazing!
I’ve never been much of a “fashionista.” I’ve always dressed more for comfort than style. But in recent years, I’ve found that there are some fashion pieces in my wardrobe that make me feel a certain way, and I gravitate towards them when I have a big day ahead of me or want to lift my spirits or make a good impression. I’ve come to realize that feeling both comfortable and confident in what I wear can be a big part of helping me feel good about myself and take control of creating my own joy on a daily basis. But, I don’t want to spend hours shopping or break my bank. This isn’t a post about high fashion or trends. This is a post about items you can fill your closet with that will make you feel great about yourself and excited to get dressed in the morning!
One and Two: A dress and a comfortable heel that makes you feel empowered
I think every woman needs to own a dress that makes her feel like she can conquer her day. Whether you’re headed to an important day at work, a court appearance, an interview, or whatever else you’re facing in your day, a dress that makes you feel like a boss can get you in the right mindset to go get it! And along with that, you need a heel that looks great with your dress but feels comfortable too.
For casual dresses, I love the Lauren Conrad and the Draper James lines sold at Kohl’s. For office wear, Calvin Klein is my go to (example pictured), and I often pick those up at TJMaxx or Marshall’s. My favorite brands of comfortable heels are Softt (like this one) and Clarks.
Three: A piece of fine jewelry that makes you feel classy
I used to wear whatever jewelry might match from literally anywhere. As I’ve grown older, I’ve developed a real appreciation for fine jewelry that I’ll be able to pass on to my daughter. I own far fewer pieces, but they are of far higher quality. One of my favorite pieces is a pair of two-tone hoop earrings (pictured) I got from my mom for Christmas. When I wear them, I feel very “put together.”
My favorite place to shop for fine jewelry is Belk. They always have great sales and have a huge selection in stores and online.
Four, Five, and Six: A great-fitting jean, a sweatshirt, and tennis shoes that make you feel cozy
Some days you just need to feel comfortable, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the “cute” along with it. I think every woman needs a great-fitting jean. All my favorite jeans come from Loft, but everyone is different. So find a brand that fits you well and enjoy living in it! Pair that perfect jean with a warm, cozy sweatshirt you really love and a comfortable pair of tennis shoes. My favorite place to shop for sweatshirts is Elly and Grace. I love the positive messages and Bible verses, and their shirts and hoodies are so comfortable. My favorite tennis shoes I’ve ever worn are On Clouds. I have this pair (pictured) in three colors and they are all I wear.
Seven: A graphic tee that makes you feel cheerful
I love a great graphic tee! I think they can really show off your personality while also making you feel happy. My favorite graphic tees come from places I love to visit, like Disneyland (pictured) or National Parks. I also own lots of shirts that reference my favorite shows or movies. I love Target for graphic tees, and Amazon is also a great place to look. But, my favorite place to buy graphic tees is Out of Print. They make shirts that celebrate my favorite hobby: reading. Their shirts are so cute and feature book covers, quotes, or fun, cheerful designs that will make you feel such joy to wear if you are an avid reader. I have this Harry Potter one and this Gatsby one, and I love them!
Eight and Nine: A simple clutch and statement shoe that make you feel polished
I’ve really only come to appreciate a really great accessory in recent years. I love how just one or two small pieces can really bring an outfit together. Most fashion lists include a “little black dress,” and I think most women probably own one. But, if you’ve got your dress, really polish up your look with a really great clutch and a statement shoe. One of my go-to pieces for a statement shoe is an animal print (pictured), and mine is really similar to this one. But if you’re not a fan of animal print, you can also do a bright pop of color like a cheerful yellow, candy-apple red, or a flirty pink. I got my favorite black clutch at Dillard’s, but I love this similar one on Amazon.
Ten: Any piece that makes you think of happy moments
These first nine staples have all been items that really make me feel great. The items that make you feel good about yourself might not be the same as mine, and thats okay! That’s why this last one is so open-ended. The things I feel happiest to wear are items that have great memories attached to them. For example, one of my favorite items in my closet is a blue polka-dot dress (pictured) that I bought to wear on a Disney World vacation. I’ve been to Disney a lot of times, but this particular one, I had my whole family with me and my dear friend, Courtney, had brought her family at the same time. We all had such fun on that trip with our children experiencing Disney together. Every time I wear that dress, I think about that trip and it just gives me joy.
