One of My Greatest Memories: The Time I Unexpectedly Saw the Queen of England
This post was originally written to celebrate the Platinum Jublilee of Queen Elizabeth II. With her passing on September 8th, 2022, I wanted to add a small tribute to the Queen.
Queen Elizabeth was someone to be admired greatly for her devotion and dedication to her country for seventy years. Doing one’s duty with grace and dignity is not easy. I have thought in the days since her death that if everyone could exhibit even one tenth of her grace, dignity, and selflessness, the world would become a much better place. Thank you Ma’am for always leading by example and demonstrating what it means to serve others.
Seeing Queen Elizabeth Go By in a Carriage
As Queen Elizabeth celebrates her Platinum Jubilee this year, I cannot help but think back to the day I saw her in person. My parents gave me a trip to London as my college graduation gift. When the friend I was traveling with and I landed in London, our first stop was Buckingham Palace to witness the Changing of the Guard. We were disappointed to learn that there would be no Changing of the Guard that day. Shortly thereafter, we overheard someone on the street say that “she was getting ready to come out.” The “she” in question was the Queen herself.
Not only did I get to see HM Queen Elizabeth, but I also witnessed an entire parade as they left the Palace and headed down the Mall. The occasion was the presentation of new Standards to her Household Cavalry. What an unexpected surprise to see the Queen instead of the Changing of the Guard!
The Queen along with her sister Princess Margaret passed by in a carriage. Additional members of the Royal Family such as the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra also rode in carriages as part of the procession. To see the Queen go by along with the horses ridden by the Household Cavalry was a once in a lifetime experience. It was a day I will never forget. With the Queen’s passing in September 2022, this memory means even more to me.
In Appreciation of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
As an Anglophile, I have long been fascinated by the Royal Family. I couldn’t let the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee go by without my own small tribute to her 70 years of service to her country. Whether you are a fan of the Royal Family or not, you have to admire anyone for doing their job for 70 years without a complaint.
Pictured is my photograph of the Queen (dressed in lavender) and her sister going by in their carriage.
Small Ways I'm Celebrating Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee
Stitch This Needlepoint Kit
If you read my post My Grandmother’s Needlepoint – A Lasting Reminder of Her Love, you’ll know that I enjoy needlepointing. I saw this kit from Liberty London online, and I decided it would make a great souvenir to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. I’m excited about getting started on it. Here is the link if you are interested in purchasing one for yourself.
These two novels by SJ Bennett feature Queen Elizabeth as a behind the scenes detective. Unbeknownst to anyone, she likes to solve crimes and is quite good at it. She enlists the help of her new Assistant Private Secretary to solve the mysteries in each of these books. I have read the first one The Windsor Knot, and I am nearing the end of the second title All the Queen’s Men. I found both of these to be cleverly written and highly engaging. My fingers are crossed that there will be more in this series. Click on the book pictures above or the links below to purchase your own copies.

Cheers to HM Queen Elizabeth II
Last but not least, I think I’ll take some of the suggestions from Karen’s post on how to celebrate all things British. Check out her post Make Time to Have Some Jolly Good Tea, British Inspired Books and TV Shows. Since I can’t be in London for the Jubilee, this will be the next best thing!
Cheers to HM Queen Elizabeth II for reaching such an incredible milestone! Her devotion to her duty for so many years is admirable and amazing. “Brilliant” as the British are fond of saying!
Have a good day –
Kristin
