5 Easy Ways to Make Date Night Even More Special
My husband and I have three small kids. We both work jobs we love, but they keep us busy. We’re pulled in a million different directions. I know you can probably relate. That’s why date night is so important to us. We love having that time to just be together. But after 16 years of date nights, or however many years you’ve been with your partner, how can you keep it fun and exciting? Have your date nights lately felt like just any old night? If so, I’ve got some simple tips to transform any type of date night into something special!
Make Dinner Out More Delightful
One of the most popular options for Date Night is to go out to dinner. The problem with that is most people end up going to the same places all the time and it stops feeling special. Here are some ways to make it exciting again!
- Go back to a place that has special meaning for one of you or both of you as a couple.
- Ahead of time, ask for recommendations from friends or go online to research and pick a restaurant neither of you have ever been to and try it out.
- Restaurant-Hop. Go to one place for appetizers, one place for entrees, and one place for desserts. It will take all night, but it’s fun!
Add Meaning to a Movie Night In
Movie nights in are one of my favorite things. But it’s so easy for it to become just another night. Here are some ways to make it more meaningful!
- Rewatch the first movie you ever watched together and take a trip down memory lane. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is ours.
- Make a list of each of your favorite movies from different stages of your life and go back and watch any that the other person hasn’t seen. It might teach you things about your partner that you didn’t know.
- Make it a marathon! Pick a series of movies and watch them all in a row (in one day or over several weeks).
- Go through AFI’s 100 Best Movies List together.
- Go out first and pick up some treats to enjoy while you watch. Our go-to is cookies from a bakery chain called Insomnia and Starbucks!
Attend an Event You Won't Forget
Sometimes all you need to spruce up date night is to find somewhere new to go. One thing that is fun to do is attend special events in your area. For example, we went to a local museum for Valentines Day this year because they had an exhibit of the movie White Christmas, which is one of our favorites. Here are some suggestions:
- Join the email lists for museums in your area to find out about special exhibits coming through.
- Check websites for local parks. Sometimes they do special events like movie screenings, outdoor activities, or other special events seasonally.
- Check for events at your local library or community center.
Go Out and Find Growth Together
Growing together is one of the best parts of being a couple. It’s also a great thing to work toward through your date nights (or days). Set a personal goal for one of you or both of you and then use your date time to work toward it. Last year, my husband taught me to ride a bike (you can read more about that journey here in this blog post), and it really brought us closer and was so much fun! Here are some ideas and examples:
- Teach your partner something you know how to do but they don’t, like a sport or a skill.
- Set a goal as a couple and work on it. Want to be healthier? Go exercise together. Want to be more organized? Go buy new storage and then rearrange your home. Want to grow spiritually? Find or start a couple’s bible study.
- Decide on something you both want to learn and go learn it! Take a class together, like take a paint class or a cooking class or a dance class.
Give Up Control of the Plans
For me, sometimes planning the date night kind of takes the fun out of it. So, if you’re like me, let someone else make the plans. Here are some options:
- Plan a night for your partner with all the things you think they would want to do. My husband did this for me a few months ago and we went to my favorite lunch spot and then to play putt-putt, which is one of my favorite things to do.
- Have someone you know well (a friend, your mom, even your kids) plan your night and then give you your itinerary right before. Then do whatever they planned for you.
- Use an app like Cobble to plan your date night for you. You and your partner swipe through date ideas and when you both like the same one, it will notify you that that’s your date night!
- Use a subscription service like The Adventure Challenge to give you tons of fresh ideas. They have an option for individuals and families too!
